Self-Sovereignty as the Goal of Healing

Part 6 of Understanding Psychedelics as Allies in Healing Series

by Katie Simons, PharmD, BCPS

As this series draws to an end, it is worth circling back around to why we partake in the challenging work of healing in the first place. The reason: When we discover our self sovereignty, we discover our true capacity as a human and what it feels to experience all of life.

At the heart of healing lies a journey into the depths of self-understanding. This journey isn’t about becoming someone new but about uncovering, confronting, and embracing the many layers of who we already are. Psychedelics, as allies, invite us to explore these layers with fresh eyes, helping us meet parts of ourselves we may have ignored or resisted. Through this process, we can gain insights that allow us to work with our fears, dismantle outdated beliefs, and cultivate compassion for even the most hidden aspects of ourselves.

Yet, it’s essential to remember that psychedelics are merely catalysts in this exploration. The true power lies within us. Psychedelics may illuminate the path, but it’s our choices, actions, and willingness to engage with what arises that bring healing to life. The transformative work happens in the day-to-day practice of integrating these lessons and embodying the insights they reveal. We are our own best healers, equipped with an innate capacity to understand and guide ourselves toward wholeness.

As we delve deeper into this process of healing, we begin to reclaim our self-sovereignty. To truly know ourselves is to build a foundation of trust, where we can rely on our inner wisdom as a compass for navigating life’s challenges and opportunities. From this place of trust, love for ourselves naturally arises—not as an act of ego but as an expression of acceptance, authenticity, and connectedness. When we operate from this space of self-sovereignty, we become conscious creators, manifesting lives that are aligned with our values and deeply connected to the greater whole. This is where healing transcends survival and transforms into thriving.

Ultimately, life itself is the experience we’re here to have. This work—the self-discovery, the healing, the integration—is all in service of living a life unburdened by suffering, a life where we can fully experience joy, connection, and growth. Remembering to live fully and embrace the process is essential. Healing isn’t about fixing or perfecting ourselves; it’s about living expansively, with curiosity and presence. When we loosen our grip on the pursuit of perfection and lean into the experience of life itself, we honor the true purpose of healing: to enjoy, to feel free, and to savor the journey.
